Summer is approaching and Hollywood is ramping up all the blockbuster biggies to entice people to movie theaters. This time of year isn't about cerebral fare like Lincoln or Silver Linings Playbook. Summer is action, adventure, romance and noise. The safest way to make a buck or a few million of them is to take tried and trusted stories and remake them, or give them a Part 2 (or 3 or more) or even a Part -1, aka the prequel. Let's take a look at what's coming this summer and their level of potential awesomeness.
May 3
Ironman 3 - A Sequel to a Sequel to a Reboot of a cartoon and one of the huge movies for summer: guaranteed to take in a boatload. Pity the other movies that open against it this weekend.
May 10
The Great Gatsby - a Reboot and looking like an amazing one at that. You had me at Baz and Leo, or, maybe the other way around.
May 17
Star Trek Into Darkness - A Sequel to a Prequel (got that?). My personal favorite of course - the one I'm most looking forward to. Please, please don't wait another four years until the next one.
May 24
Fast and Furious 6 - a Sequel to a Sequel to a Sequel to a... never mind, you get the point. I'm sure this will be great but I guess I need to see F&F 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
May 31
OK, I'm totally excited here. Two potentially excellent movies opening and neither of them are sequels!
After Earth with Will and Jaden Smith, and Now You See Me with Jesse Eisenberg and the always-Godly Morgan Freeman.
June 14
Man of Steel - a Reboot of a Reboot of a cartoon. By all accounts this will be better than the Christopher Reeve offerings and with the special effects, yes, it's one to watch. As is Henry Cavill and his costume.
June 21
World War Z - All New. Ah, Brad. I just hope this lives up to the hype and the expense it cost to make. It's up against Monsters University so you know where the family will be heading. Let's see who wins.
June 28
White House Down - a Reboot. Wait, no it's not, but how many movies about attacking the White House can we have in one year? One good reason to watch: Channing Tatum.
July 3
Despicable Me 2 - a Sequel takes the reins of the July 4 weekend and I hope it's as good as the first one. Steve Carell is genius.
July 19
Red 2 - a Sequel to an amusing first movie. Helen Mirren as an assassin is just pure gold.
July 26
The Wolverine - a spin-off of a Sequel to a Sequel... wait, I'm confused. However, Hugh Jackman nails Wolverine and I love all the X-Men movies so I hope this one's good.
July 31
The Smurfs 2 - Really?
August 2
300: Rise of an Empire - A Sequel. I wasn't totally convinced by the first one. Let's see how it does.
August 7
Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters - A Sequel. OK, if you've read all the Percy Jackson books you know it's not really a sequel, but it is the second movie and it's one of the best books in the series. August is obviously Greek mythology month.
August 9
Elysium - All New! Matt Damon! Saving Earth! Another "Let's Save The Earth" movie!
August 16
Kick-Ass 2 - A Sequel. Um, OK. Does anyone really care?
August 23
The Mortal Instruments City of Bones - The last of the summer movies. All new and another franchise waiting to explode. If you have a tween or teen girl you know all about this series and the date's on the calendar already. This is the next Twilight and Hunger Games. Oh, and Jamie Campbell- Bower's in it... mmm.
So there you have it: summer in a nutshell. What movie are you most looking forward to?
